Udo Eggert

Udo Eggert (born June 19, 1848 in Alkersleben , † March 1, 1893 in Kamakura , Japan ) was a German university professor and political scientist .

Life

Udo Eggert was appointed to the University of Göttingen in 1885 as a professor for constitutional law and finance . A year later he signed a contract with representatives from the Japanese Ministry of Education. As a result, he taught at the Imperial University of Tokyo for six years from 1887 to 1893 . In February 1887 Eggert came to Japan with his wife and three children.

In addition to his work at the university, Eggert acted as an advisor to the Japanese Ministry of Finance and on agricultural issues. In Japan he is considered to be one of the founders of the modern Japanese cooperative system.

Shortly before his return to Germany, Udo Eggert died of typhus . He was buried in the Aoyama Cemetery in Tokyo .
