Udo Herbert Pfriemer (born September 2, 1909 in Riga , † 1997 in Graefelfing ) was a German entrepreneur , publisher , author and historian who had compiled an extensive collection on the history of water supply and disposal over decades . Pfriemer lived in Graefelfing near Munich for a long time.

Life

Pfriemer lived in Germany from 1918. In 1929 he graduated from high school in Munich and studied history, law and political science in Munich, Berlin and Riga and completed his diploma in economics. During the Nazi era he worked as a business journalist and "business editor" and at times also as a soldier. Pfriemer welcomed the elimination of Jews from German economic life and actively advocated the Nazi state's policy of expansion during the war.

In 1948 he founded Pfriemer-Verlag in Munich , a publishing house for house, utility and health technology, which has published more than 200 books as well as specialist journals and catalogs over the years. As a historian, Pfriemer collected material on the history of water supply and disposal for over 40 years, as he saw this as a gap in historiography. On numerous study trips he visited places where he could study ancient or medieval water technology. In 1997, after his death, he left the manuscript of his "Sanitary Chronicle" in 48 folders, each with 200 pages of text and numerous additional pictures. A book edition in 15 volumes was planned for the manuscript, but this could not be realized. The subjects of the manuscript were general health care, water supply, health care through drainage and waste disposal, heat supply and personal hygiene. Over the years, Pfriemer had compiled over 20,000 sources on the history of sanitary engineering and building services. His working library contained around 5000 volumes.

In 2001, to mark its 100th anniversary, the sanitary company Hansgrohe financed a one-volume selection entitled "... that water flows for the purpose - a sanitary chronicle", which the journalist, lecturer and physician Friedemann Bedürftig edited and which was published in Berlin's ABW-Wissenschaftsverlag has been published.

In 2003, the Frontinus Society in Bonn, a scientific society specializing in the history of water supply, took over the estate and library of Pfriemer, where it can be viewed in the Society's reference library in Bonn.
