description

Uebelmannia pectinifera grows with dark reddish brown to grayish, more or less cylindrical bodies that reach heights of growth of up to 100 centimeters and diameters of up to 15 centimeters. The epidermis appears mostly grainy and covered with waxy, white scales. The 15 to 40 ribs are sharp-edged. The brownish to gray felted areoles on it are very close together. The slender, funnel-shaped pale yellow flowers are up to 1.5 centimeters long and 1 centimeter in diameter. The pear-shaped to cylindrical fruits are purple-red and 1.5 to 2.5 centimeters long.

Systematics, distribution and endangerment

Uebelmannia pectinifera is widespread in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais and grows on sandstones containing quartzite. It was first described in 1967 by Albert Frederik Hendrik Buining .

There are four subspecies, which essentially differ in the color of the thorns and the number of ribs:

  • Uebelmannia pectinifera subsp. pectinifera
  • Uebelmannia pectinifera subsp. flavispina (Buining & Brederoo) PJBraun & Esteves
  • Uebelmannia pectinifera subsp. horrida (PJBraun) PJBraun & Esteves
  • Uebelmannia pectinifera subsp. eriocactoides (Řepka, Krajča & V.Toman) Guiggi

Uebelmannia pectinifera is listed in Appendix I of the Washington Convention on Endangered Species . In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN from 2002, she was as uncritical ( " Least Concern classified"). In 2013 the species was named " Endangered (EN) ". H. listed as endangered. The subspecies Uebelmannia pectinifera subsp. pectinifera , Uebelmannia pectinifera subsp. flavispina and Uebelmannia pectinifera subsp. horrida were named " Vulnerable (VU) " in 2002 . H. classified as endangered. In the 2010 update, the subspecies were not reassessed and removed from the red list.
