Francesco Uetam shortly Uetam , actually Francisco Mateu y Nicolau (* 4. May 1847 in Palma ; † 19th May 1913 ) was a Spanish opera singer ( bass ).

Life

Mateu learned singing in Mallorca and was a student of Juan Goula , who became his mentor and promoter. He made his debut in 1869 at the Teatro Principal in Mallorca in the opera Linda de Chamounix by Gaetano Donizetti . At the Teatro San Fernando of Seville he appeared in Verdi's Requiem before Goula brought him to Russia from 1879 to 1880, where he sang Mephistopheles in Faust and Don Basilio in The Barber of Seville at the St. Petersburg Opera .

After appearing at the Teatro San Carlos in Lisbon, he had his greatest successes at the Teatro Real in Madrid. He sang with Bibiana Perez and Julian Gayarre in Wilhelm Tell and celebrated triumphs as Cardinal Brogny in La Hebrea . At the Teatro Costanzi in Rome and at the Teatro Pagliano in Florence he has appeared with singers such as Mattia Battistini , Gemma Bellincioni and Francesco Tamagno .

After he was hired by the Teatro Cervantes in Málaga for performances of Faust and Lucrezia Borgia (as Don Alfonso) in the early 1900s , he retired from active music life in 1903.

In 2004, a vocal recording of Uetam was rediscovered, he probably in 1903 Madrid to a Edison 'rule phonograph cylinder was added.

In 2003–2006, the documentary “Uetam - Rebirth of a Legend” by Cologne director Stephan Winkler was made , which reconstructs the story of the former opera star and accompanies the renovation of his former home in Palma de Mallorca.
