Ulrich Riehm (born April 24, 1952 in Mannheim ) is a German sociologist and technology researcher who researches socially relevant processes and consequences of digitization in the field of technology assessment (TA).

Career

Born and raised in Mannheim , Riehm studied sociology and pedagogy at the university there , completed additional IT training in Paderborn and then took up a position in the data center of an international industrial company. In 1979 he moved to the Department of Applied Systems Analysis (AFAS) at the Karlsruhe Research Center , which in 1995 became part of the Institute for Technology Assessment and Systems Analysis (ITAS), today a facility of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). Between 2005 and 2012 he worked at the Office for Technology Assessment at the German Bundestag (TAB) in Berlin, then again at ITAS in Karlsruhe .

research

The TA projects and investigations carried out by Riehm are typically characterized by the application of quantitative and qualitative sociological methods as well as the acceptance of the factual dimension of the technical applications examined. In some projects, there is even more to be said about helping to shape the application systems, such as the accompanying research on the "Public Petitions" pilot project of the German Bundestag as part of a TAB project or the establishment of a specialist portal for technology assessment supported by the DFG . In addition, the aim is not only to incorporate the results into political advice , but also to disseminate them in specialist communities and to publish them scientifically. Empirical social research, in-depth knowledge of the factual dimension of technology and intensive communication with different publics characterize this approach of technology assessment for information and communication technologies and digital transformation , which Riehm represents at ITAS and beyond.
