Ulrich Schneider (art historian)

Ulrich Schneider (* 1950 in Amberg ) is a German art historian .

Ulrich Schneider studied art history, classical archeology, Christian archeology and history at the universities of Regensburg , Erlangen and Heidelberg from 1971 to 1980 and received his doctorate in 1981 under Hans Belting in Heidelberg. This was followed by a research stay at the Central Institute for Art History in Munich as a state scholarship holder from Baden-Württemberg . From 1981 to 1984 he was a research assistant at the Germanic National Museum in Nuremberg. In 1984 he went to Aachen , where he was initially construction consultant for the municipal museums, from 1996 head of the textile, furniture, jewelry and games department and from 1990 to 2003 director of the Suermondt Ludwig Museum , the Couven Museum and the Burg Frankenberg Museum . In 1999 he was appointed honorary professor for art history at RWTH Aachen University.

From May 1, 2003 until his retirement in 2011, he was Managing Director of the Museum of Applied Art in Frankfurt am Main . In 2003, he also took on a teaching position at the Art History Institute of the Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main and was appointed honorary professor at the university a year later.

For his services to bilateral cultural work, Schneider received the Officer's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic in 2001 and the Knight's Cross of the French Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 2011 .
