Ulrich "Uli" Wieland (born June 5, 1902 in Ulm ; † July 9, 1934 at Nanga Parbat , Pakistan ) was a German mountaineer and alpine pioneer.

Life

Uli Wieland was born as the son of Philipp Wieland († 1949 on Lake Thun ) and his wife Lydie Wieland († 1938) in Ulm. He grew up as the youngest child of a family of manufacturers with two sisters and three brothers.

His grandfather Philipp Jakob Wieland founded the Wieland plants in Ulm and Vöhringen in 1820 . After completing his high school diploma and subsequent studies, the young graduate engineer expanded his professional experience during a three-year stay abroad in the United States of America . After his return he was a senior executive in his family's company from 1930.

Wieland was already an avid mountaineer at the age of 15.

On June 8, 1930 he climbed the 7,459  m high Jongsong Peak in the Himalayas as part of an expedition to the Kangchenjunga under the leadership of Günter Dyhrenfurth . An ascent of the Kangchenjunga was not possible due to the adverse weather and the snow storm.

In 1934 Uli Wieland took part in the German Nanga Parbat Expedition 1934 , the aim of which was the first ascent of the 8,125 m high Nanga Parbat. On July 8th, however, the weather changed, a hurricane combined with heavy snowstorms arose. Due to advanced exhaustion and the adverse conditions, Uli Wieland died on July 9, 1934 and has been missing on the mountain ever since. Nine other mountaineers were killed on this expedition: Alfred Drexel on June 8th, Willo Welzenbach on July 14th, Willy Merkl on July 16th and the six Sherpas Nurbhu, Pinzo, Taschi, Dorje, and Gay-Lay.
