The Jongsang Ri (also Jongsong Peak ) is a 7462 m high mountain in the Himalayas on the border between Nepal, India and China.
The first ascent took place on June 3, 1930 by the German Hermann Hoerlin and the Austrian Erwin Schneider , who were participants in an expedition with Frank Smythe , Ulrich Wieland , Marcel Kurz , Tsering Norbu, Lewa and GO Dyhrenfurth . These other climbers reached the summit on June 8th. The actual goal of the mountaineers was the first ascent of Kangchenjunga , only about 20 kilometers away , this was abandoned and instead three lower mountains were climbed for the first time, including the Jongsang Ri.
At the time of the ascent it was the highest peak that could ever be climbed. It was not an altitude record, however, as a height of more than 8000 m had been reached several times before (without reaching the summit). The record lasted until the first ascent of Kamet on June 21, 1931.
