The Kangbachen is a secondary peak of the Kangchenjunga in the Himalayas .
While the main peak is on the border between Sikkim (India) and Nepal , the Kangbachen is on the west ridge on Nepalese territory. The western ridge of the Kangchenjunga runs from the main summit over the 8505 m high western summit ( Yalung Kang ) and then descends to a small plateau at over 7700 m altitude. The Kangbachen juts out a little on the north side of this plateau. The west ridge of the Kangchenjunga descends to 6,675 m , only to culminate again in Jannu at 7,711 m . The Kangbachen lies above the Kangchenjunga Glacier in the north, the Ramtang Glacier in the northwest and the Yalung Glacier in the south.
It was first climbed on May 26, 1974 by Wiesław Kłaput, Marek Malatyński, Kazimierz Olech, Zbigniew Rubinowski and Wojciech Brański over the southwest ridge. As early as 1930 the Dyhrenfurth / Smythe rope team tried to reach the summit; but it only came up to an altitude of 6400 m. In 1965 a Yugoslav expedition came to a ridge summit at 7535 m. Then in 1974 the Poles reached the summit in an adventurous expedition.
