The North Sikkim District ( North English for "North") is a district in the Indian state of Sikkim . The district administration is based in Mangan .
geography
The North Sikkim District extends over the northern half of the state of Sikkim. The area is 4226 km². The district borders Nepal to the west and the Tibet Autonomous Region ( PR China ) to the north and east . The area includes the high Himalayas with the eight-thousander Kangchenjunga in the far west on the Nepalese border. The watershed between Yarlung Tsangpo and the lower reaches of the Brahmaputra runs along the northern border . North Sikkim lies entirely in the catchment area of the Tista , a tributary of the Brahmaputra.
In the western part of the district is the Kangchenjunga National Park , in the northeast the Yumthang Valley nature reserve .

According to the 2011 census, the North Sikkim district has 43,709 inhabitants. With 10 inhabitants per square kilometer, the district is only sparsely populated. The district is predominantly rural. Of the 43,709 residents, 39,065 people (89.38%) live in rural areas and 4,644 people in urban communities.
The North Sikkim district is one of the areas of India that are predominantly populated by members of the “tribal population” ( scheduled tribes ). Among them were (2011) 28,715 people (65.70 percent of the district population). The Dalit ( scheduled castes ) numbered only 982 people in 2011 (2.25 percent of the district's population).
Population development
As everywhere in India, the population in the North Sikkim district has been growing rapidly for decades. In the years 2001–2011, however, the increase was only 6.5 percent (6.53%). In these ten years the population increased by around 2,700 people. The following table illustrates the development:

With the district capital Mangan (4644 inhabitants) there is only one place in the district that is considered a city (notified town).
District population by gender
As is common in India, the district always had more male than female residents. Even by Indian standards, the surplus of men was well above average. Among the youngest residents (under 7 years of age) the proportions are 51.85% male to 48.15% female.

District population by language
The population of the North Sikkim district is linguistically mixed. However, almost 70 percent of the population belong to the three strongest language groups, Lepcha, Nepali and Bhotia. In the Chungthang sub-division, 2,603 people (25.93 percent of residents) speak Bhotia, 1,988 people (19.80 percent of residents) speak Nepali, 1,718 people (17.11 percent of residents) speak Hindi and 1,189 people (11.84 percent) speak Hindi Percent of residents) Lepcha. In the Manganese sub-division, 12,671 people (37.63 percent of residents) speak Lepcha, 8,159 people (24.23 percent of residents) speak Nepali, 3,695 people (8.17 percent of residents) speak Bhotia, 2,751 people (8.17 percent) of residents) Limbu, 1,256 people (3.73 percent of residents) Sherpa and 1,079 people (3.20 percent of residents) Hindi. Population of the district by confession
A small majority of the residents are Buddhists (Bhotia, majorities among the Lepcha and Tamang). Hindus (Hindi, majority among the Limbu and Nepali) and Christians (minorities among the Bhotia, Lepcha, Limbu and Tamang) are significant religious minorities. The smaller religious minorities include Sikhs and Muslims. The following table shows the exact religious composition of the population:

education
Thanks to significant efforts, literacy has risen sharply in recent decades. In urban areas, five out of six people can read and write. In the country, more than 77 percent can read and write. The strong differences between the sexes and the urban / rural population are typical of Indian conditions.
