The district of South Sikkim is a district in the Indian state of Sikkim . The district administration is based in Namchi .

geography

The South Sikkim district extends over the central south of the state of Sikkim. The area is 750 km². The district borders on West Sikkim to the west, North Sikkim to the north, East Sikkim to the east and the Darjeeling district (state of West Bengal ) to the south . The area comprises the mountainous region south of the High Himalayas and is bordered by the river valleys of Rangit in the west and Tista in the east.

According to the 2011 census, the South Sikkim district has 146,850 inhabitants. With 196 inhabitants per square kilometer, the district is densely populated. The district is predominantly rural. Of the 146,850 residents, 125,651 people (85.56%) live in rural areas and 21,199 people in urban communities.

The district of South Sikkim is one of the areas of India that are heavily populated by members of the "tribal population" ( scheduled tribes ). They included (2011) 41,392 people (28.19 percent of the district's population). The Dalit ( scheduled castes ) numbered 6,053 people in 2011 (4.12 percent of the district's population).

Population development

As everywhere in India, the population in the South Sikkim district has been growing rapidly for decades. The increase in the years 2001–2011 was almost 12 percent (11.65%). In these ten years the population increased by over 15,000 people. The following table illustrates the development:

Significant places

With the district capital Namchi, there is only one place in the district with more than 10,000 inhabitants. Statistically, however, the Jorethang settlement is also considered a notified town.

The population of the South Sikkim district is linguistically mixed. However, a clear majority speaks Nepali. In the Namchi sub-division, 75,070 people (75.91 percent of residents) speak Nepali, 3,910 people (3.95 percent of residents) speak Hindi, 2,992 people (3.03 percent of residents) speak Tamang, 2,732 people (2.76 percent of residents) speak Tamang Percent of residents) Lepcha, 2,485 people (2.51 percent of residents) Sherpa, 1,967 people (1.99 percent of residents) Limbu, 1,817 people (1.84 percent of residents) Bhotia, 1,760 people (1.78 percent of Residents) Rai and 1,439 people (1.46 percent of residents) Bhojpuri (Hindi language). Population of the district by confession

A small majority of the residents are Hindus (Hindi, majority with the Limbu and Nepali). Buddhists (Bhotia, majorities among the Lepcha and Tamang) and Christians (minorities among the Bhotia, Lepcha, Limbu and Tamang) are significant religious minorities. The smaller religious minorities include members of traditional religions and Muslims. The following table shows the exact religious composition of the population:

education

Thanks to significant efforts, literacy has risen sharply in recent decades. In urban areas, almost 90 percent of the population can read and write. In the country, four out of five people can read and write. The strong differences between the sexes and the urban / rural population are typical of Indian conditions.
