The Rangit ( Hindi रंगीत Raṅgīt , English Rangeet River ) is an approximately 80 km long right tributary of the Tista in the western part of the Indian state of Sikkim and on the border with West Bengal .
The Rangit rises on the eastern flank of the Narsing , about 25 km south-southeast of the eight-thousander Kangchenjunga . The river is fed by the local glaciers. The first 60 km of the Rangit flows through the West Sikkim district in the Himalayas in a southerly direction. 3 km above Legship , the Rathong Chu meets the Rangit from the right. There is a dam there. At Jorethang the most important tributary, the Rammam , flows into the Rangit from the right. The Rangit then turns to the east and forms on its lower 20 km the border from Sikkim to the south bordering state of West Bengal . Finally the Rangit flows into the Tista, which flows south.
The Rangit has water all year round. In spring, snowmelt is an important factor. Between June and September, the rainfall of the monsoons determines the runoff of the Rangit. The white water river Rangit is a popular body of water for rafting tours . Difficulty levels are IV. The best time is between October and April.
Hydropower
The Rangit is dammed below the confluence of the Rathong Chu by the 45 m high Rangit dam. The hydropower plant, which went into operation in 2000, has three turbines of 20 MW each. The storage space is 1.175 million m³.
