Ulrike Baumgartner-Gabitzer (born July 16, 1957 in Vienna ) is an Austrian manager and politician ( ÖVP ). From 1999 to 2006 she was a member of the National Council , and from the beginning of 2014 to the end of 2018 she was chairman of the board of Austrian Power Grid AG (APG), the Austrian electricity transmission network operator.

Life

Education and professional career

After graduating from high school , Ulrike Baumgartner-Gabitzer studied law at the University of Vienna .

After completing her studies, she completed her court year in Vienna. In 1984 she joined the Federal Ministry for Trade, Commerce and Industry and subsequently took over the management of the cabinet of the then Economics Ministers Robert Graf and Wolfgang Schüssel . From 1992 to 1995 and from 1997 to the beginning of 2007 she was Secretary General of the Association of Austrian Electricity Companies (VEÖ). From 1995 to 1997 she interrupted this activity and became head of the cabinet of the then Vice Chancellor Wolfgang Schüssel. Baumgartner-Gabitzer was a member of the board of Verbund AG from 2007 to 2013 .

Political career

In the National Council election in October 1999 , Ulrike Baumgartner-Gabitzer was elected to the Austrian National Council for the first time . She was re-elected in the November 2002 election and was a member of parliament until 2006. She was constitutional spokeswoman for the ÖVP and deputy chairwoman of the constitutional committee. From 2005 she was, among other political functions, regional party chairman of the ÖVP Vienna.

Ulrike Baumgartner-Gabitzer was a member of the Board of Directors of EURELECTRIC , board member of the Austrian National Committee of the World Energy Council and the Friedrich Funder Institute, Vice President of the Austrian-Slovenian Society, member of the Margaretha Lupac Foundation and chair of the Evangelical Working Group of the ÖVP.

Content

As spokeswoman for the constitution , she advocated the introduction of real postal voting for elections at federal and state level, in order to give the broadest possible population the opportunity to exercise their right to vote.

She sees the standardization of animal welfare regulations at federal level as one of her successes. In the government program of the Schüssel II government , the coalition advocated a nationwide animal protection law . Ulrike Baumgartner-Gabitzer led the negotiations on the part of the ÖVP. The new Animal Welfare Act has been in force since January 1, 2005.

From 2003 to 2004 she was a member of the Austria Convention , which dealt with the reorganization of the Austrian Federal Constitution with the aim of fundamental state and constitutional reform. Baumgartner-Gabitzer participated as a constitutional lawyer in the committee that discussed the results of the Austria Convention.
