Ultima Thule is a German short film by Holger Mandel based on a novella by Stefan Grabinski from the series Demon of the Movement from 1919.
content
Ultima Thule (lat.) - The most distant Thule: The island in northern Britain, probably Iceland, was considered by the ancient Greeks to be the very end of the world.
At the end of his life, the old station master Roman remembers his dead friend Joszt and the rumors about him and his train station “Ultima Thule” in the High Tatras . At that time, the mountain people believed that Joszt could predict death. Roman now has to recognize how much truth there was: “Ultima Thule” influences people. The focus of the film is on the strong human relationships between Roman and Joszt, who also draw their strength from areas that cannot be rationally grasped - the premonitions of the so-called " second face ", for which there are no explanations, which are nevertheless fate-determining and ultimately make up the secret of life. The tension of the story arises from this mixture of reality and transcendence .
criticism
“An ambitious project, this film adaptation of a novella from the beginning of the 20th century. The filming locations are carefully chosen, lovingly furnished and brilliantly photographed, the pictures of the mountains are particularly impressive. The film knows how to play with light and shadow, creating an atmosphere for the supernatural, the transcendental. The levels blur, the little fictional film raises the question: What lies behind our world, there beyond Ultima Thule, as the Romans called the border town of their experience? "
"Despite its brevity, an epic-looking mythical film about the endlessness of death."
“'Ultima Thule' is a poetic fantasy story about the gift of the second face, breathtakingly staged, hypnotic, carried by a fascinating slowness and accompanied by suggestive lyre organ-like music. Moving, touching and confidently staged. "
