The Umatilla National Wildlife Refuge a is located on both sides of the Columbia River in the US states of Oregon and Washington , about 15 mi (24 km) northwest of Hermiston , the closest location. It covers an area of 8,907 acres (3,605 hectares) in Oregon and 14,876 acres (6,020 hectares) in Washington. It was founded in 1969 to provide compensation ( english mitigation ) to create for the habitat loss caused by flooding as a result of the construction of the John Day Dam was built. The sanctuary is under bird watchers ( English birdwatchers) and other nature lovers.
The protected area is a colorful mix of open water areas, mud flats , flat marshes , temporary wetlands , farmland, islands and shrub steppes . It is divided into six units, two of which are in Oregon, three in Washington, and one in the middle of the Columbia River. The lack of wetlands and other natural habitats in the area makes the Umatilla National Wildlife Refuge attractive to migratory waterfowl, bald eagles , colony-breeding birds, and other migratory and habitat species. It is located in the middle of the migratory routes along the North American Pacific coasts and offers resting and wintering areas for geese and ducks that breed in the Arctic .
