Umberto Pelizzari (born August 28, 1965 in Busto Arsizio ) is a former Italian freediver and world champion in various freediving disciplines.

Life

Umberto Pelizzari learned to swim as a child and was a successful professional swimmer. In 1984 - at the age of 19 - he started freediving with a height of 189 cm and a body weight of 84 kg. Around 1990 he was a close friend of Francisco "Pipin" Ferreras , husband of Audrey Mestre-Ferreras . The story of the deep diving competition between Pelizzari and Pipin was the plot for the Imax production Ocean Men: Extreme Dive , from 2001, which Bob Talbot directed .

Pelizzari was one of the founding members of the Association Internationale pour le Développement de l'Apnée , AIDA. In 1995 he set a world record in "constant weight diving" with a depth of 72 meters. In the evaluation with a variable weight of up to 30 kg in the "No Limits" discipline, he reached a new record in the following year with 110 meters. In the "No Limits" class with no weight restrictions, he dived 131 meters in 3:32 minutes and thus held records in all categories without breathing apparatus. In 1996 and 2001 Pelizzari was AIDA world champion with the Italian national team.

In 2001 Pelizzari ended his apnea career.

Pelizzari is currently a professor at the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa and a television presenter . He chairs the Apnea Academy and, with his former trainer Stefano Tovaglieri, wrote a high-circulation manual on freediving.
