The Sachseln bypass tunnel relieves the town of Sachseln , located in the Swiss canton of Obwalden , of through traffic on the A8 motorway . At 5,213 m, it is the sixth longest road tunnel in Switzerland .

facts and figures

A tunnel boring machine (TBM) was used to drill a 4,456 meter long pilot gallery with a diameter of 3.70 meters. With an excavated cross-section of 11 m², this resulted in an excavated volume of 48,428 m³.

The actual road tunnel was built from 1990 to 1997. The drive also took place with a tunnel boring machine. With an excavated cross-section of 109 m², this resulted in an excavated volume of 565,819 m³. The Altbiel ventilation tunnel, which can be used in emergencies, has an excavated cross-section of 45 m² and is 820 meters long.

The tunnel was opened on September 24, 1997, and the construction costs amounted to 300 million Swiss francs.

situation

In the tunnel there is oncoming traffic at a speed of 80 km / h. The security facilities include video surveillance, fire alarm systems and emergency lighting. There are six emergency stop bays (niches) in each direction of travel.

In terms of safety, the tunnel is not up to date: there is no parallel safety gallery, the tunnel ventilation is insufficient and the lighting and video surveillance are too weak.

In 2014, the construction of a safety gallery on the mountain side was started to increase tunnel safety. The tunnel with a diameter of 4.20 meters will be created with a tunnel boring machine. From the end of 2015, cross connections to the road tunnel will be excavated at a distance of 250 meters. The ventilation system should also be adapted. New fans at both tunnel portals will enable the supply air to be controlled in the event of operation or an incident. The fire protection system is also being renewed. The work should be completed by 2019 and cost a total of 140 million Swiss francs.
