Ewil

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The hamlet of Ewil is part of the municipality of Sachseln in the canton of Obwalden .

geography

Ewil is located southwest of the village of Sachseln on Lake Sarnen on Brünigstrasse ( Hauptstrasse 4 ). The hamlet of Edisried lies between Ewil and Sachseln . The hamlet of Ewil is not an administratively or politically delimited unit from Sachseln, so the boundaries are not precisely defined. In a narrower sense, Ewil consists of the closed built-up area on both sides of Brünigstrasse to the banks of Lake Sarnen. However, the northeastern quarter with predominantly commercial use ( Maxon Motor AG , timber construction company, car garages) is also included in Ewil. The customs house located southwest at the end of the Sarnersee and the settlement Ried located at the southwest end of the lake also belong to Sachseln, but are not ascribed to the hamlet of Ewil.

The Sigetschwandgraben and Leimerengraben streams ran through the settlement area of Ewil. During storms in 1926, 1954, 1955, 1996, 1997 and 2007, these led to floods and caused great damage in the Ewil area. In order to eliminate the risk of flooding emanating from the two streams, a construction project for 3.8 million Swiss francs was implemented from 2008 to 2009. In the upper area of both channels, two debris collectors were built to hold back debris and wood. The Leimerengraben was led below the bedload collector in a long right curve in a north-westerly direction to the Sigetschwandgraben. The Sigetschwandgraben was derived from its original fall line below the gorge and now crosses the ridges in a left curve. Both streams now flow together above Brünigstrasse and are channeled into Lake Sarnen in a shared, approximately 550-meter-long open channel. This channel crosses the cantonal road and the tracks of the Zentralbahn.

Attractions

The St. Apollonia Chapel from 1756 is a cultural asset of regional importance and is a listed building. Two residential buildings are classified as cultural objects of local importance. The townscape of Ewil has changed a lot since the 1990s. «Within a few years, the formerly important historical site has changed beyond recognition through demolitions and new buildings. Most protection efforts have failed here. " This is how Peter Omachen, cantonal conservationist for the canton of Obwalden, summed up in 2010.

economy

The north-eastern quarter of Ewil is characterized by industrial companies. There is the company premises of Maxon Motor AG , the largest employer in the canton of Obwalden . In addition, several medium-sized companies are located there, such as timber construction, car garages, carpentry and crane service. There is a campsite on the shore of the lake and a small boat harbor at the western end of the hamlet.

Transport links

The district is on Brünigstrasse ( Hauptstrasse 4 ) between Sachseln and Giswil. The Ewil-Maxon stop of the Zentralbahn in the north-eastern district of the Brünigbahn has been in existence since 2005 . The Way of St. James from Stans via Flüeli-Ranft runs through Ewil and Giswil over the Brünig Pass and on to Interlaken .
