Maxon Motor AG building in Sachseln

The Maxon Motor AG (proper spelling: maxon motor ag, appearance under the brand maxon ) is a supplier of precision small motors and drive systems. The company, headquartered in Sachseln , Canton of Obwalden ( Switzerland ), develops and manufactures DC motors (with coreless winding system maxon ), matching planetary , spur and special gear, actuation and control electronics as well as powder injection molded ceramic parts. The drives are used in the fields of medical technology, industrial automation and robotics, measuring and testing technology, aerospace and the automotive industry.

history

The company was founded in 1961 in Sachseln under the name Interelectric Sachseln AG . The investors and company founders were the two brothers Erwin Braun (1921–1992) and Artur Braun (1925–2013) of the Frankfurt electrical company Braun . It was not until 1999 that the company was renamed Maxon Motor AG . As a short form of Max-Sohn , the name should allude to the son (or sons Artur and Erwin) of Max Braun , the founder of Braun GmbH.

From 1963 to 1967, electroforming articles, especially the shaving foils for Braun razors, were produced for the electrical appliance manufacturer Braun . At the same time, Interelectric AG set up a development department for electromechanical devices. The production of electroformed articles was outsourced to Elfo AG in 1975 . Sieves for household centrifuges replaced the production of shaving foils there. As part of an inheritance settlement, Elfo AG went to Werner Braun, while Karl-Walter Braun received the shares in Interelectric AG. Both are sons of the company's founder, Erwin Braun.

From 1968 to 1969 the Maxon program (direct current motors with ironless rotors) was developed. As a result, the diamond-shaped winding and its manufacturing process were patented. In September 1989 the first production plant outside Switzerland was opened in Sexau near Freiburg im Breisgau . Gear development, gear production and the powder injection molding system (CIM and PIM) are located here. In 2003/04 the company expanded to Hungary .

In 1999 the company was restructured. Since then, Interelectric AG has acted as the umbrella of the holding company of the Maxon Motor Group, its main shareholder is Karl-Walter Braun.

In 2006, the Maxon Medical division was founded, offering drive systems for medical technology. This should not be confused with B. Braun Medical AG in Sempach . There are also the MARS (mechatronic systems), maxon ceramic (manufacture of ceramic parts) and maxon dental (dental ceramics for implant systems) divisions.

At the end of 2018, Maxon Motor AG took over the British manufacturer of geared motors Parvalux Electric Motors Ltd with around 180 employees in Bournemouth . In April 2019 a new production facility was opened in Taunton (USA). Over 100 people are to be employed there. At the same time, the corporate structure was adjusted and a management of the Maxon Group and a management of the Swiss main location in Sachseln were created. The company has been operating under the “maxon” brand since July 1, 2019, as it has transformed itself from a manufacturer of motors and components to a supplier of drive systems.

Business data

Maxon employs a total of around 3,050 people, including over 1,300 in Sachseln (as of 2020), and generated sales of 567 million Swiss francs in 2019. The nine production sites are located in Sachseln (Switzerland), Sexau (Germany), Veszprém (Hungary), Cheonan (South Korea), since March 2019 in Taunton (USA), since autumn 2014 at the subsidiary MDP in Neyron (France), in Enschede ( Netherlands), Suzhou (Jiangsu Province, China) and Cheonan (South Korea).

Areas of application for Maxon motors

Motors from Maxon are used in the fields of medical technology, industrial automation, measurement and testing technology, communication, robotics, safety technology, the automotive industry, aerospace and consumer applications.

On July 4, 1997, NASA landed on Mars as part of the Pathfinder mission . The Mars vehicle Sojourner was equipped with 11 DC motors from Maxon Motor. In January 2004 the two Mars rovers Spirit and Opportunity landed on Mars, both vehicles are each equipped with 39 of the company's DC motors. Maxon products (encoders and sensors) were also used in the latest Mars robot Curiosity . It landed on Mars on August 6, 2012.

During the SpaceX missions to the International Space Station , Maxon motors are used to move the solar panels of the Dragon space capsule . The ESA Sentinel-3 satellite also contains motors from Maxon.
