Umut Sönmez (born June 20, 1993 in Varto ) is a German - Azerbaijani football player of Turkish descent.

Player career

In the club

Sönmez went through the youth department of FC Augsburg before he was accepted into the FC Augsburg II squad in summer 2012 . After half a year, he moved to FC Memmingen in the Regionalliga Bayern during the 2013 winter break .

For the 2014/15 season Sönmez was signed by the Turkish second division club Orduspor . During the next winter break he left this club in the direction of league rivals Gaziantep Büyükşehir Belediyespor .

For the 2016/17 season he and his two team-mates Erkam Reşmen and Ufuk Budak were signed by the first division club Kayserispor . After a season he moved on to the second division side Adana Demirspor .

National team

Sönmez, who was born in the eastern Turkish city of Varto , moved to Germany with his family when he was a child. After it became clear that he would not receive a standardization either from the German or the Turkish youth national team, he accepted the offer of the Azerbaijani Football Association and began to play for the Azerbaijani U-21 national team.
