Uncarina sakalava is a species of plant in the genus Uncarina in the sesame family (Pedaliaceae).

description

Uncarina sakalava grows as a tiny tree with a short trunk that has a crown with ascending and often unbranched branches. The plants reach heights of up to 2.5 meters. The 20 by 20 centimeters large leaf blades have 3 to 5 lobes with rounded tips. On the upper side of the leaf there are individual, short-stalked mucous glands and simple long hair. Short-stalked mucous glands are formed along the nerve pathways on the underside of the leaf.

The inflorescence consists of cymes with 3 to 5 individual flowers that form dense clusters. On the yellow flowers have a dark red throat. The flower tube is 4 to 6 inches long.

The fruit, squeezed at the side, is egg-shaped when viewed from the side and has a long, slender beak . On the side of the fruit, 2 wings are formed which are studded with simple spines. Two different spine shapes are formed on the fruit, which is up to 5 centimeters long and 4 centimeters wide. The approximately 6 hook spikes per row are up to 40 millimeters long and are very thin and flexible. The upper spines usually protrude beyond the beak. The many simple spines are up to 5 millimeters long. No false partitions are formed. The rounded-triangular seeds are 9 millimeters long and wide and have 1.5 millimeter wings.

Distribution and systematics

Uncarina sakalava is endemic in central western Madagascar and northwestern Madagascar, in the provinces of Mahajanga and Antsiranana , on limestone soils.

The species was first described in 1962 by Jean-Henri Humbert .

There is a paratype ( Henri Perrier de la Bâthie 15083) with smaller and more or less triangular leaves (about 8 by 9 centimeters). These are entire to only very slightly lobed and develop dense hairs. Presumably this is another, as yet undescribed species.
