Uncarina turicana is a species of plant in the genus Uncarina in the sesame family (Pedaliaceae). The specific epithet goes back to the Roman name of the city of Zurich , Turicum , and was selected to honor the merits of the city and some of Zurich's citizens in the preservation and research of the Malagasy succulents.

description

Uncarina turicana grows as a small tree with a densely branched crown made up of thin branches. The trunk diameter reaches 30 centimeters and the stature height up to 5 meters. The leaf blades, up to 14 centimeters wide and 20 centimeters long, are almost entire or have up to 4 lateral tips. The dark green top of the leaf is loosely covered with simple hair and a few short-stalked mucous glands with a square head. On the light green underside there are many mucous glands, especially along the nerve tracts and individual hairs directly on the tracts.

The inflorescence consists of cymes with 1 to 3 individual flowers that do not form dense clusters. The golden yellow flowers have a dark red throat. The externally reddish colored tube becomes about 5 centimeters long.

The side of the fruit, which is strongly compressed, is elongated in the side view and has a broad triangular beak. In addition, 2 wings, about 5 centimeters long and 2.5 centimeters wide, are formed on the sides. There are only hooked spikes. There are 7 to 8 pieces in a row, they are up to 9 millimeters long and do not protrude beyond the beak. The widespread bases of the spines form a crest about 2 millimeters high. No false partitions are formed. The inverted-egg-shaped seeds are 7 millimeters long and 8 millimeters wide and have 2 millimeter wings.

Distribution and systematics

Uncarina turicana is endemic in southern Madagascar , in the south-west of the Toliara province , on limestone soils. The species has a very small range and combines many characteristics of other Uncarina species.

The species was first described in 1999 by John Jacob Lavranos in cacti and other succulents .
