history
The text has been known as a drinking song since the mid-19th century. In 1894 it was printed in the Deutsches Liederhort with the indication of origin "Schleswig-Holstein 1891". A version reworked into a children's song has also been in circulation since the 20th century.
The most common melody of the song comes from the 18th century. It was originally sung to the text Three riders rode out to the gate and is now mainly known to the text The mill rattles by the rushing brook . The nursery rhyme version in particular is also popular with other, similar melodies.
A text version has been handed down from the Netherlands since 1839 under the title Wie in Januari is born is . It is mostly sung to the melody of the song Al is ons prinsje nog zo , which is very similar to the melody of the German song.

In the song, the months of the year are sung through in stanzas , with the birthday children of the respective month having to perform a certain action. The song is therefore particularly suitable as a introductory or greeting song. The song offers small children the opportunity to get to know their own date of birth, and at the same time it emphasizes their individual importance by giving them the opportunity to step forward when they mention the month of birth. In kindergartens and elementary schools, the song is often sung as a moving singspiel . In the nursery rhyme version, the actions of the birthday children are differentiated between a curtsey (for girls) and a bow (for boys).
