Incurable is a German silent film melodrama from 1917 with Martha Novelly and the American opera singer Leon Rains in the leading roles. Directed by Emerich Hanus playing Emil Jannings and Werner Krauss two supporting roles.
action
At the center of the action is a couple who have two children. When one of the children dies, the mother goes insane from unspeakable pain. Doctors diagnose that she is incurable and that her state of mind will not improve. Only after a fundamental shock, triggered by a great fire that breaks out in the madhouse, does her five senses return and she seems on the way to healing. Back home with the husband and the remaining child, the recovered must recognize that the ex-husband who has since divorced her has remarried in order to give the child a new (read: sane) mother. The homecoming woman does not want to stand in the way of the happiness of her husband or that of her child and sacrifices her life for the future of her two loved ones.
Production notes
Incurable was written in Denmark shortly before the end of 1916 and had four files. The film passed the censorship in January 1917, the premiere was probably a little later.
For the writer Heinrich Lautensack this was the last film script ; he soon became mentally ill and died a little later.
criticism
“The plot of a novel, rich in tragedy and melancholy, which was read a lot at the time and which is particularly well thought out and captivating, forms the subject of this film. Martha Novelly embodies the difficult leading role in a gorgeous way. (...) The gripping, harrowing plot, the admirable presentation, the excellent photography ensure the film an undisputed success.
