União Metalo-Mecânica was a Portuguese manufacturer of automobiles . It still exists as a company. The company was founded in 1977 to sell and manufacture off-road vehicles for use in agriculture, industry and government.

Company history

The Lisbon company started producing off-road vehicles in 1977 . The brand name is UMM . Vehicle production ended in 2006. In 2006 UMM stopped production.

The first Cournil model was created under license from Cournil in France . Petrol and diesel engines from Peugeot were available for the drive . The Cournil model was available in three variants: Tracteur, Randonneur and Entrepreneur. The cars were imported from 1977 to 1979, and from 1979 they were also manufactured in Portugal.

UMM Entrepreneur (1983) (owner Alberto Rebelo)

In 1980 the UMM Cournil received a facelift and only one version was produced as the UMM 4x4.

1982 Introduction of a new engine: Peugeot Indenor XD2 2.3D

In 1983 the doors were enlarged.

In 1984 the successor model, Alter, was presented at the Paris Motor Show.

In 1985 production of the UMM Cournil ends and the successor model Alter I is brought onto the market. This model differs from its predecessor in that it has a redesigned front section and a few other changes. The most striking feature are the three windshield wipers attached above the windshield. The engine is also a Peugeot Indenor Diesel with 2.3 or 2.5l displacement.

In 1986 the first UMMs are also available on the French market. The introduction of a new gearbox and new shock absorber as well as the sound insulation introduced for the first time lead to the new model name Alter II . The old turbo with 110 hp is presented at the Paris Motor Show.

1987 Introduction of a new engine (XD3TE 2.5l Turbo Intercooler), a new gearbox, disc brakes and power steering. As an attempt to gain a foothold on the American market, two UMMs with a Ford V6 engine (from the Ford Bronco) were manufactured, but they did not meet with the desired response.

1989 Facelift: two new body variants: soft-top and pick-up. A special model for rallies comes onto the market, the UMM Troféu .

In 1991, on the occasion of the Pope's visit to Madeira, a UMM Papamóvel was built, an armored Popemobile based on a UMM Alter with a long chassis.

In 1992 UMM started two new projects in order to be able to hold its own against the growing competition. The Alter III is designed to compete with the Suzuki Vitara . The second project is based on the Mini Moke concept and uses parts of the Peugeot 205. UMM relies on the government's promise to finance prototype development through the PEDIP (Programa Específico de Desenvolvimento da Indústria Portuguesa) program. However, this funding is missing and the development is stopped.

In 1993 the dashboard of the Alter II was modernized and the Alter II Turbo Turismo model with panoramic windows in the roof was introduced. The sales figures collapse sharply, the Portuguese National Guard also decides against buying UMMs and instead introduces the Nissan Patrol, which is manufactured in Spain.

During 1993 the assembly was carried out by Francisco Batista Russo & Irmão .

Series production is stopped in 1994.

In 1999 UMM introduced the Alter 2000 model , which was primarily intended for the French market and the former colonies. In the following year, however, only 21 pieces of this model are sold.

The last two UMMs were manufactured in 2004, and in 2006 UMM withdrew completely from automobile production.

Rally participation

In 1982, three UMM Cournil took part in the Paris-Dakar rally, which were equipped with a larger engine than the production model. Instead of the 2.3l diesel engine, these models had an Indenor 2.5L with 76PS. All UMMs reached Dakar.

In 1983 4 UMM Cournil took part in the Paris Dakar Rally, two again with the 2.5l diesel, 2 with a V6 PRV 2.7l with 160PS. All 4 made it to the finish.

The following year the largest group of UMMs took part, with 5 vehicles. Again all 5 reached the goal, but 3 were disqualified because they took too long to complete a stage. The 5 participating vehicles were also involved in the two previous rallies, but some of them were newly motorized.

In 1985 3 UMMs started at the Paris-Dakar Rally, but this time none of the vehicles reached the finish. They gave up on the first stages.
