The Unica is a font from the group of the sans serif linear antiqua with a classical or grotesque character .

history

The Haas Unica was designed by the '77 team ( André Gürtler , Christian Mengelt and Erich Gschwind) as a hybrid of Helvetica , Univers and Akzidenz Grotesk for the then still new electronic photo typesetting. It was published in 1980. With the advent of desktop publishing programs and a copyright battle, the Haas Unica soon disappeared from the market. It was not until 2012 that digitized font weights from Unica were introduced.

Availability

There are two competing commercial variants of the Unica today that are used on some websites as well as in book printing.

LL Unica77

The LL Unica77 was created based on the original drawings from the 1970s. This was done in collaboration between Maurice Göldner and Christian Mengelt for the Swiss type foundry Lineto .

New Haas Unica

The Neue Haas Unica is based on the photo typesetting files found in the Linotype archive in Germany. These were digitized by the Japanese designer Toshi Omagari on behalf of Monotype GmbH .
