The three areas of uniform wear in the German Bundeswehr are:

  • Army uniform wearer
  • Air force uniform wearer
  • Navy uniform wearer

Each soldier is assigned to a uniform wearer area. Army soldiers are generally wearers of army uniforms, soldiers of the Luftwaffe are air force uniform wearers and the navy are naval uniform wearers ( armed forces ). Soldiers in the armed force cross military organization areas Joint Medical Service , Streitkräftebasis and cyber space and information associated with one of three Uniform areas. Likewise, every service post is assigned to a uniform wearer area. There are army, air force and naval uniforms in all career groups and career paths in the Bundeswehr.

The uniform of the soldiers, their ranks , rank badges and other badges can vary depending on the area of uniform wear. Even if soldiers in a military organizational area belong to different areas of uniform wear, they can use standardized uniform parts. All uniforms of the military organization area cyber and information space (CIR) wear the navy blue beret with the "badge CIR".

The posts for protocol soldiers of the guard battalion at the Federal Ministry of Defense are assigned to a uniform area. The protocol soldiers, however, are equipped with the service suits of all three uniform wearer areas in order to be able to be deployed flexibly in the protocol service .

Human Resources Management

The personnel management of the soldiers does not take place according to organizational areas , but according to areas of uniform wear.

At least in the years 2004 to 2006 it could happen that the chances of being accepted into the employment relationship of a professional soldier within a military organizational area were dependent on belonging to the uniform wearer area. Legal recourse to the military service courts has been opened for a soldier's legal dispute relating to a change of uniform wearer within a military organizational area .

Until the end of 2015, separate orders of transport were established for the members of the individual uniform wearer areas . As a result, candidates for promotion in one area of uniform wear were more likely to be promoted despite poorer performance values than candidates for promotion in another area of uniform wear with better performance values. This led to resentment in the cross-armed military organization areas in which soldiers from different areas of uniform wear work together. Soldiers who did similar jobs and were judged together in a comparison group had little understanding if a comrade was promoted faster only because he belonged to a different area of uniform wear. For promotions with permanent placement from January 1, 2016, independent, now cross-armed promotion sequences were created from the respective uniform wearer area in order to meet the principle of promotion according to professional performance .
