Company history

The Energizer story began in 1886 when Washington Herbert Lawrence (1840–1900), then manager of the Brush Electric Company , founded the National Carbon Company (NCC) . In 1896, Energizer offered the first batteries to end users. The then 6- inch "The Columbia" battery was developed to supply the first telephones with electrical power. Two years later, Russian immigrant Conrad Hubert founded the American Electrical Novelty and Manufacturing Company (AENMC) in New York to manufacture and market new developments with batteries.

In 1905, AENMC changed its name to American Ever Ready to refer to flashlight production. American Ever Ready became part of the National Carbon Company in 1914. Together, they created the first company to specialize in batteries and flashlights.

The National Carbon Company merged with the Union Carbide Company in 1917 , and expanded into the United States , Canada, and Mexico . For the next 32 years, Union Carbide became known as the only full-range supplier of batteries of all sizes and flashlights. As Union Carbide expanded, the "Eveready" brand name was established.

In the course of time, all products were then renamed to the new brand name "Energizer".

Eveready Battery Company / Energizer developed the first 9 volt battery (1956). The company also developed the first batteries for transistor radios. The first rechargeable nickel-cadmium batteries came from Energizer in 1958. The first standard alkaline battery was developed by Energizer in 1959.

Energizer developed the first silver oxide cell for use in hearing aids or watches around 1960 . This also created the basis for lithium battery technology, which first became marketable in 1963 with a lithium cell.

In 1986, Ralston Purina Co. , based in St. Louis , Missouri, bought Eveready Battery Company, the holding company for all Energizer brands.

In 2007, Energizer took over the care products manufacturer Playtex Products . Energizer paid (including the assumed debt) $ 1.9 billion (then the equivalent of 1.4 billion euros) for Playtex.

On July 1, 2015, the group was split up. The household goods sector (batteries, flashlights) was separated as Energizer Household Products (EHP) and later took over the name Energizer Holdings again. The previous Energizer Holdings, in which the personal care products (Schick, Wilkinson Sword, Playtex, Hawaiian Tropic, Edge) remained, was renamed Edgewell Personal Care .

In January 2018, Energizer took over the Rayovac battery division, including the trademark rights to Varta for consumer batteries, from the conglomerate Spectrum Brands . However, only one year later, by order of the EU antitrust authorities, Energizer had to give up the household batteries sector in the EU, which was then bought back by Varta.
