The University of Niigata ( Jap. 新潟大学 , Niigata daigaku , short Shindai ( 新大 )) is a state university in Nishi-ku, Niigata , Niigata Prefecture , Japan .

history

The oldest origin was the Kyōritsu Hospital ( 共 立 病院 ), which was founded in 1870. It became the Niigata Prefectural Hospital in 1876 and continued its medical school in 1879. Although the school closed in 1888, the clinic remained as a municipal hospital. In 1910, the Niigata State Medical School ( 新潟 医学 専 門 学校 , Niigata igaku semmon gakkō ) was re-established in what is now the Asahimachi campus and the city hospital became its clinic. In 1922 it developed into the Niigata Medical School ( 新潟 医科大学 , Niigata ika daigaku ).

The development of the medical school into a state ( imperial ) university wanted the prefecture and city administrations and the citizens (like Kanazawa ); it was not realized before the Pacific War .

In 1949 Niigata University was founded through the merger of Niigata Medical School and six technical schools. The six were:

  • the Niigata High School ( 新潟 高等学校 , Niigata kōtō gakkō , founded 1919),
  • the First Normal School Niigata ( 新潟 第一 師範学校 , Niigata dai-ichi shihan gakkō , founded in 1874),
  • the Second Normal School Niigata ( 新潟 第二 師範学校 , Niigata dai-ni shihan gakkō in Jōetsu , founded in 1899),
  • the normal youth school Niigata ( 新潟 青年 師範学校 , Niigata his shihan gakkō in Shibata , founded in 1922),
  • the Nagaoka Technical Center ( 長 岡 工業 専 門 学校 , Nagaoka kōgyō semmon gakkō in Nagaoka , founded in 1923), and
  • the Prefecture School of Agriculture and Forestry Niigata ( 新潟 県 立 農林 専 門 学校 , Niigata-kenritsu nōrin semmon gakkō in Gosen , founded in 1945).

At first the university had eight locations. In 1968 the Ikarashi campus was reopened and the faculties (except medicine and dentistry) moved to the campus in the several years. The cities of Nagaoka and Jōetsu lost the faculties of the university; instead of them, however, they received the new state universities: the Nagaoka Technical University ( 長 岡 技術 科学 科学 , founded in 1976) and the Jōetsu University of Education ( 上 越 教育 大学 , founded in 1978).
