University of Palencia

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The University of Palencia ( Universidad de Palencia ) existed from 1212 to 1250 and was the first university in Spain . After the University of Bologna (founded in 1088), the University of Paris (1160), the University of Oxford (1167) and the University of Cambridge (1209) it was the fifth university in Europe. Today there is a Valladolid University campus in Palencia .

Since 1208 the professors of the cathedral school in Palencia had received salaries from the king of Castile , Alfonso VIII . These privileges were supplemented by a papal charter in 1212. Until about 1250, a degree in the liberal arts and theology was offered. The royal favor had turned to the University of Salamanca (founded in 1218). The professors emigrated (mostly to Salamanca), the University of Palencia stopped teaching.

It is uncertain whether the facility in Palencia was already an actual, self-governing university.
