history
Since the Reformation could not be prevented from spreading to Lorraine , the Catholic Church tried to maintain its influence in this area and to take measures to re-Catholicize the Protestant territories. One of these measures was the establishment of a Jesuit university in Pont-à-Mousson.
Duke Charles III. and his cousin Cardinal Charles de Lorraine-Guise jointly decided to establish a university, which is located in the place halfway between the imperial cities (and in fact also the border bishoprics → Trois-Évêchés ) of Toul , Verdun since 1552 under the imperial vicariate of the French king , Metz and Cambrai , the city of Metz and Nancy , the capital of the Duchy, should be settled. Pope Gregory XIII hesitated at first, but quickly recognized the advantages of the proposed foundation and laid the foundation for the college and university of Pont-à-Mousson on December 5, 1572 with his bull “In Supereminenti” .
The university comprised four faculties, including the artist faculty and the theological faculty directly assigned to the Jesuits, while the other two, law and medicine, were secularly managed, but were also under the overall direction of the Jesuits.
Shortly after the annexation of the area to France in 1766, after the death of Stanislaus I Leszczyński , the university was given a royal edict by Louis XV in 1769 . transferred to Nancy.
