The University of Algiers ( Arabic جامعة الجزائر, DMG Ǧāmiʿat al-Ǧazāʾir ) is a university in Algiers , Algeria . It was founded in 1909 and has more than 100,000 students. The principal is Hamid Bencheniti .
history
The university was founded in 1909 during the French colonial rule as the first university in French Algeria (by law of December 30, 1909). The establishment was the result of a number of academic endeavors, notably the Act of 1879 which established five specialized schools - medicine , pharmacy , science , literature , and law . During and after Algeria's independence , the University of Algiers continued to teach, but underwent numerous changes in its organization and structure. The university carried the name of Benyoucef Benkhedda temporarily after his death in 2003; from 1961 to 1962 he had headed the transitional government of the National Liberation Front and studied at the university.

The library holds around 800,000 volumes.

The university is the largest in the country and had around 106,000 students in 2007. According to Rector Hadjar in 2008, it had 115,452 students enrolled and 5,600 teachers.
As of 1998 there were six faculties, as of 2001 seven faculties. Since 2009 the university has three faculties:
- Faculty of Law , with two departments for public law, private law
- Faculty of Medicine , with three departments for dentistry , medicine, and pharmacy
- Faculty of Islamic Studies , with three departments for Faith and Religion, Sharia and Law, Language and Culture
