The University of Malaya (Mal. Universiti Malaya , English University of Malaya ) in the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur is the oldest university in the country. The motto of the university is "Ilmu Punca Kemajuan" (Knowledge is the key to success).

history

The University of Malaya has its origins in the King Edward VII College of Medicine founded in 1905 and Raffles College created in 1929 . Both colleges were merged in October 1949 to form the University of Malaya , based in Singapore . Due to the rapid growth of the university in its first decade, two autonomous branches were established in 1959, one in Singapore that would later become the National University of Singapore and one in Kuala Lumpur, which has retained its name to this day. In 1962 the two branches became independent state universities.

organization

The university management consists of the Chancellor , three Pro-Chancellors , the Vice-Chancellor , four Deputy Vice-Chancellors , the Treasurer, the Head of Registry, the Head of the Library and the Director of University Malaya Medical Center. The chancellor and the three pro-chancellors are honorary positions and are filled by well-known personalities, while the full-time management of the university is headed by the vice-chancellor . The entire university management is supervised by a board of directors .
