Universum is the ORF's weekly documentation channel . The first Universum broadcast (Das Erste Paradies 1) was broadcast on September 29, 1987, and has been broadcast on ORF 2 on Tuesdays at 8:15 p.m. since then . Due to the success of the series, a program has also been broadcast on Thursday at 9:05 p.m. (rarely at 8:15 p.m.) since Thursday, March 5, 1998 (457th program - natural forces).

Since January 11, 2013, the ORF has been broadcasting as a spin-off every Friday after ZIB 2 in ORF 2 Universum History. These are individual films and mini-series as in-house or co-productions, but in some cases also take over from third-party productions. The Universum logo is used as the logo, expanded by the word “HISTORY” under the logo box.

Content profile

Since the beginning of the 1990s, Universum has been dealing with the most diverse areas of nature and historical topics under the head of the department, Alfred Payrleitner, and the program manager, Walter Köhler. In the Tuesday broadcasts, the main focus is on documentaries about flora and fauna. Every Friday Universum-History shows the great stories of human history. Love, power and death - the oldest motifs of mankind are implemented with the help of the most modern film techniques.

The program's opening melody is borrowed from the third movement of Igor Stravinsky's Jeu de Cartes 'Das Kartenspiel' . Franz Robert Wagner, later the actor Otto Clemens , acted as the spokesman for the beginning of the Tuesday series . The most successful authors of the series include Michael Schlamberger, Alfred Vendl, Steve Nicholls, Manfred Christ, Harald Pokieser, Klaus Feichtenberger, Heinz Leger, Kurt Mündl and Georg Riha .

At the same time as the television series, Universum magazine appears ten times a year with a circulation of 55,000 copies.

In 2006, Manfred Christ and Harald Pokieser were the first Austrians to win one of the “Oscars” of international nature films with the satirical documentary The Wild and the West : the Panda Award for “Innovation” from the British Wildscreen Festival .

In 2008, the contribution The Genius of Nature was awarded an Emmy for Best Camera at the “News and Documentary Emmys” .

In 2010 Jörg Daniel Hissen and Heinz Leger received the “Gold Camera Award” at the “US International Film & Video Festival” for their documentary Mount St. Helens - The Volcano Lives .
