Immortal long-distance game

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Immortal Distance Game is a chess game that was played from 1964 to 1965 in correspondence chess between the two Swedish correspondence chess masters Arvid Sundin and Erik Andersson. She became famous above all for the record-breaking material preponderance of the loser in the mate position - it even surpasses that of the Immortal game . The fact that the final position can be seen on a Swedish chess stamp issued on October 12, 1985 (worth 3 kroner) contributed to its fame .

The immortal long distance game was played in the master class of the ICCF world tournament. Here you could qualify for a preliminary tournament ("semifinals" - see qualification requirements ) for the correspondence chess world championship.

Notes on the game

For notation see chess notation

Arvid Sundin - Erik Andersson, 1964

1. d2 – d4 e7 – e6 2. e2 – e4 d7 – d5

The French defense came on board by changing trains .

3. Nb1-c3 Bf8-b4

The Winawer variant .

4. e4-e5 Qd8-d7 5. Bc1-d2

5. Qd1 – g4 would have been answered with f7 – f5.

b7-b6

Black intends his poor white-squared bishop abzutauschen on a6 against the white. That could only be warded off by 6. Nc3 – e2.

6. f2-f4 Ng8-e7 7. Qd1-g4 g7-g6

So far White has waited before moving his Bf1 so as not to lose any tempo because of the inevitable exchange of bishops. In this sense, 8th h2 – h4 or 8th Ng1 – f3 would be!?.

8. Bf1 – b5 c7 – c6 9. Bb5 – d3 After 9. Bb5 – a4 you would have to reckon with Bc8 – a6 and the rest of the procedure Qd7 – b7, Nb8 – d7, c6 – c5.

Bc8 – a6 10. Bd3xa6 Nb8xa6 Andersson has achieved his first strategic goal: exchanging his bad bishop, after which the white man now has a weak piece with Bd2 due to his pawn position (black central pawn chain).

11. Qg4-e2 Qd7-b7 12. Ng1-f3 Ra8-b8 13. Ke1-f2

A typical procedure in closed positions, the king is safe because of the sealed off center in the middle. Sundin connects the rooks and may want to use g2 – g4 and f4 – f5 to take action against Black's king position, which has been weakened by g7 – g6. Furthermore, the tower h1 can be used on the h-file (h2 – h4 – h5).

13.… Bb4xc3 14. b2xc3

A double-edged exchange, the black-field bishop will be missing to the black in the further course of the defense of his king.

14.… c6 – c5 15. De2 – b5 + Ne7 – c6 16. Ra1 – b1 0–0

Black probably saw the following white pawn maneuver, but did not suspect any danger, since the white queen cannot intervene in the attack.

17. g2-g4 Nc6-a5 18. f4-f5 Sa5-c4 19. f5-f6 Sa6-c7

If Black instead trades on d2 or tries to win material with 19.… Na3, the white queen can intervene decisively on the kingside.

20. Qb5-b3 Qb7-c6 21. Bd2-h6 Rf8-c8 22. h2-h4 a7-a5

Black is now threatening to win White's queen: Apparently the attracting person must do something about the threat of 23.… a5 – a4 ...

23. h4 – h5 !!
