Signature machine

US government signature machine, 1917

A signature machine (also signature machine , marking machine , handwriting system ) is designed a machine to copy signatures, the early 20th century. Since the owner of the signature has to prepare his own template for the signature machine, it is usually only used with his consent.

The forerunner of the signature machine was the polygraph used by Thomas Jefferson .

These mechanical signature machines are used to record the angle at which the pen is held when signing and the pressure that is exerted in a "training phase" and to reproduce it during reproduction. In the training phase, sensors measure pressure and angle. These measurement data are saved and converted into pressure and angle during playback.

The signature machine is often used for the mass reproduction of autographs of famous personalities on autograph cards. In addition, it is used by politicians and people who have to make a lot of signatures. Former US Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld admitted in 2004 that he had used a signature machine to sign letters of condolence to the relatives of fallen soldiers.

In Germany the use of such devices became known through the Flick affair and the Steffi Grafs tax case .

When the US Congress extended the temporary monitoring powers of the anti-terrorism law Patriot Act on May 26, 2011 , US President Barack Obama , who was attending the G8 summit in Deauville in 2011 , left one of his mandates to sign the law on the same day Make signature machines in Washington. This procedure, which has never been practiced before, was deemed necessary in order to avoid the expiry of the aforementioned monitoring powers on May 26, 2011 and a subsequent endangerment of the national security of the USA.
