Coordinates: 32 ° 3 ′  S , 150 ° 37 ′  E The Upper Hunter Shire is a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of New South Wales . The area is 8,096 km² and has about 14,000 inhabitants.

Upper Hunter is located at the upper end of the Hunter Valley about 290 km north of the metropolis of Sydney . The area comprises 74 hamlets and villages, including Aberdeen, Belltrees, Bow, Blandford, Brawboy, Bunnan, Cassilis, Dangarfield, Dartbrook, Upper Dartbrook, Davis Creek, Dry Creek, Ellerston, Glenbawn, Green Creek, Gundy, Gungal, Kars Springs, Kayuga, Omadale, McCullys Gap, Merriwa, Middle Brook, Moobi, Moonan Brook, Moonan Flat, Murrurundi, Owens Gap, Pages River, Parkville, Rossgole, Rouchel, Rouchel Brook, Upper Rouchel, Sandy Creek, Satur, Scone, Scotts Creek, Segenhoe, Stewarts Brook, Timor, Tomalla, Waverly, Wingen and Woolooma. The headquarters of the Shire Council is in the city of Scone in the center of the LGA, where about 5,000 people live.

The Upper Hunter Shire Council has nine members who are elected by LGA residents. Upper Hunter is not divided into districts. The mayor of the council is also recruited from among the councilors.
