Uppstaig is a nature reserve in the parish ( Swedish socken ) Gammelgarn on the Swedish island of Gotland .

location

Uppstaig is about 3 km west of Katthammarsvik , 38 km southeast of Visby , 22 km southeast of Roma , 13 km north of Ljugarn and 31 km south of Slite . The nature reserve is 1.8 km² and is located north of the regional road 631 from Katthammarsvik to Dalhem . It was identified in 1996 and expanded in 2009. Today it is also a Natura 2000 area.

Nature reserve and jungle

Large parts of the nature reserve have the character of a primeval forest, and especially north of the Hällträsk wetland there are pines and spruces that are 200–300 years old. Because the forest could stand there untouched for many years, you will also find a lot of dead wood and tree trunks that were overturned by the wind and have since remained lying and slowly decomposing. Because of the primeval forest character, many species of insects live there; 300 species of beetles alone have been observed. There are also numerous orchids , including the long-leaved forest bird and pyramid dogwort .

There are many wetlands in the central and southern part of the reserve , of which Hällträsk is the largest.

Burial ground

East of the Hallträsk (lake) is the large burial ground from the younger Iron Age with 63 sites ( Swedish fornlämningar ). It consists of a domar ring that measures seven meters in diameter, two building stones , four loops and 56 round stone settings ( Swedish stensättningar ). The stone circle is located in the southern part of the burial ground and consists of eight natural stones .
