The Ura e Tabakëve (2018)

The Ura e Tabakëve (in German Gerberbrücke ) is an Ottoman stone arch bridge in the Albanian capital Tirana and one of the most important historical buildings in the city. The bridge, which was probably built in the 18th century, crossed the city river Lana until the 1930s . In 1948 it was declared a cultural monument.

The Ura e Tabakëve is eight meters long and consists of three arches. Their width is 2.5 meters. The bridge made of river stones is 3.5 meters high at the middle arch.

Formerly located on the south-eastern outskirts, it is now in the middle of the city center, a few hundred meters east of the central Bulevardi Dëshmorët e Kombit . It is only used by pedestrians and only crosses an artificial pond.

history

The Ura e Tabakëve was part of a trade route that connected Tirana south of Dajti via Shëngjergj (in the east of Tirana County , therefore also called the Shëngjergj Road ) with Dibra . It was of great economic importance for the inhabitants of the hill country east of the city. The farmers and ranchers used this to transport their products and animals to sell in Tirana. The profession of butcher or tanner was particularly widespread among the Xheleti and Kuka families . Like the district across the bridge, they were called tabakë , which includes the professions of butcher, skin stripper, skinner and tanner.

Until the 1930s, after other bridges had also been built in the immediate vicinity, the arch bridge was one of the most important connections over the Lana. Since then, the river has passed the bridge a little further south. In the 1950s, a road was built along the Lana on a dam, which from then on separated the bridge from the straightened river and runs almost at the same level as the top of the bridge. Since then, the course of the river has been almost parallel to the bridge running in an east-west direction, which was built in a bend in the river and had the eastern bridgehead on the south bank.

During the communist dictatorship the bridge was neglected - only the uppermost part protruded from the pavement surrounding it. The site may have been used as a garbage dump. In 2004 it was restored and the area immediately around the bridge was dug back to its original level.
