Urban Terror , commonly abbreviated as UrT, is a free multiplayer - first-person shooter of Frozen Sand (formerly Silicon Ice Development ). Originally developed as a mod by id Software’s Quake III Arena , Frozen Sand released Urban Terror in April 2007 as a stand-alone computer game . The game itself is free ( freeware ), but Frozen Sand holds the rights to the components it has developed.

Urban Terror received a 2007 Mod of the Year Award nomination from the modder website Mod DB. It was played in the e-sports league ClanBase and the community maintains its own leagues and regularly organizes tournaments. Furthermore, the game is still played in the Urban Zone , a league exclusively for Urban Terror.

history

In 1998 Urban Terror was a Mappack (collection of various sceneries) for Quake III Arena . The international development team (at that time still Silicon Ice Development) was formed in spring 2000. The first official version (Beta 1) was presented during Quakecon in August 2000. In the years that followed, the development team had a size of around 20–30 members and worked on the next version of the game (Beta 2). Beta 2 was released in June 2001. The release of the upcoming version (Beta 3) was mainly delayed by the fact that many of the developers involved in the Beta 2 version were now fully active for companies in the computer game industry. Beta 3 was presented to the public at QuakeCon 2003.

With the availability of the Quake engine "id Tech 3" , Urban Terror version 4 (the term beta was not used) appeared in spring 2007. This version offered, among other things, graphical innovations, new maps and some bug fixes . Version 4.1 was released in December 2007, version 4.1.1 was released in January 2011.

Urban Terror 4.2 was released on August 3rd, 2012 and contains a passport system for the first time, so players have to register for some servers and leagues. Urban Terror 4.3 was released in October 2016, which is the last version based on the Quake engine.

We are currently working on the development of Urban Terror HD , a completely revised version of the game based on Unreal Engine 4, new character animations, weapons and maps.

Game mechanics

Urban Terror extends the game mechanics of Quake III Arena with the components endurance (exhaustion) and accuracy. These are closely related to the health of the character in Urban Terror. If the health decreases, for example due to a hit or fall, the maximum endurance also decreases. In the event of a serious hit or fall, the character's movement speed is restricted. In addition, the character can bleed, which at regular intervals further decreases health and makes aiming difficult. However, the game character has the option of connecting and thus restoring the ability to move or avoiding the further regular loss of life energy (health). In addition, the players of a team can treat each other, whereby a normal player can help the wounded person to regain 50% of his original life energy by bandaging.

As long as the character is not acutely injured, it is able to sprint. The use of this ability costs stamina (exhaustion) and is therefore limited in time. If you move at normal speed, endurance will be restored to its maximum, limited by your health.

Furthermore, in Urban Terror there is the possibility to hold on to protrusions and pull up. This is also a movement that is not implemented in Quake.

In Urban Terror, the colors or skins of the teams can be changed relative or absolutely to your own team using the client-side setting.

Game modes

The following modes are supported:

Anti-cheating technologies

Urban Terror originally used the PunkBuster anti- cheating technology integrated in Quake III Arena . However, Punkbuster does not support modified versions of the Quake III Arena engine ; however, this is used by the stand-alone version of Urban Terror 4.0. A short cooperation with Battleye ended on August 4th, 2007. The development team completed the search for another anti-cheating technology and developed their own, which was originally intended to appear in Urban Terror HD, but was already used in version 4.2 . This technology is closely linked to the Auth system, which has also been implemented from version 4.2.

License

Urban Terror may be distributed unmodified and exclusively free of charge over the Internet . The Quake 3 SDK EULA is used, which means that the source code of the game is closed source and may only be distributed electronically via the Internet (not on data carriers). Everything that does not belong to the source code can be distributed with any medium. No Quake III Arena game files are used, but the Quake engine , which is available as free software under the GNU GPL . The ioUrbanTerror file is an executable file based on the ioQuake3 distribution, which is supplied separately and whose source code is available.
