history

At the end of 2003, Roberto "RM" Mura and Marco "MZ" Z. Urna founded in Cagliari . The band was formed to record existing pieces written for a previous project based on Black Metal . The group's black metal roots continued to shape the music in the early years of activity, while further inspirations were drawn from the work of Tronus Abyss and Void of Silence . Even before the release of various demo recordings , the debut Justa Funebria was released in 2004 via Vomitum Niger Productions , an independent label initiated by Mura . Subsequently, the band increasingly changed the music played to funeral doom and changed the inner constellation through cooperation with other musicians. The bassist Luigi "Zin" della Rossa from Malvento temporarily became part of the group and took part in the recordings of the EP Mors Imperatrix Mundi , which the band self-published in 2005 and re-released in 2014 via GS Productions . While della Rossa left the group again, Unra signed a contract with Aeternitas Tenebrarum Music Foundation for the release of the next albums.

Under the influence of groups like Thergothon and Skepticism, the duo developed their own sound further to the music presented on Sepulcrum MMVI , which Timothy Coleman describes for Doom-Metal.com as a "hideous mixture of funeral doom, black metal and generally creepy dark ambience" . With Arcana Coelestia and Locus Mortis , the two Urna members initiated side projects, which they describe as Urna's main influences and experimental spaces. With Arcana Coelestia the Doom components of the band would become “more melodic and elegiac”, while with Locus Mortis the Black Metal-oriented side would become “faster and more violent”. The musicians then continued with the Urna project in 2008. The influence of the artist Francesco "Eidvlon" Gemelli, who joined the band, shaped the experimental sound that Urna presented in 2009 with the album Iter Ad Lucem , released via Aeternitas Tenebrarum Music Foundation and I, Voidhanger Records . According to Johannes Schmuck for Metal.de , the album is "not very innovative", referring to Esoteric , but it transports "a special atmosphere that [...] works very well in this case." In the years after its release, Mura pulled to Great Britain, where he initiated the Third I Rex label . Despite the spatial distance, the musicians continued the cooperation and worked together with Davide "Eon [0]" Colladon from Progenie Terrestre Pura on the album Mors Principium Est, which was released in 2013 via Aeternitas Tenebrarum Music Foundation . It was hailed as a "powerful and moving" album by Matt Halsey for Doom-Metal.com.

The music of Urna is assigned to Funeral Doom . The webzine Doom-Metal.com describes the music as "blackened Funeral Doom" which combines "wide spaces and a heavy atmosphere in almost formless music".
