Ursula Thiemer-Sachse

Ursula Thiemer-Sachse (born May 20, 1941 in Berlin ) is a German American scholar .

Ursula Thiemer-Sachse studied ethnology (ethnology and German folklore) as well as prehistory and early history at the Humboldt University in Berlin . The doctorate took place in 1968 as well as the doctorate B in 1983 at the Latin America Institute of Rostock University . The subject of the habilitation was the socio-economic conditions at the Zapoteca at the time of the Spanish conquest of Mexico. A contribution to the study of the first class society formation in America . In 1989 she became head of the Department of Ancient America at the Central Institute for Ancient History and Archeology of the then Academy of Sciences of the GDR , which she remained until the institute was dissolved in 1992. In 1993 Thiemer-Sachse became Professor of Ancient American Studies at the Latin America Institute of the Free University of Berlin . In 2006 she retired.

In her research, Thiemer-Sachse is primarily concerned with the pre-Columbian cultures of Mesoamerica and Central America . In particular, she researches archaeological cultures and protohistoric societies, especially central Mexico and Oaxaca , the ethnohistory and ethnology of Oaxaca, mythology and iconography as well as the history of science - especially research on Alexander von Humboldt. As an internationally recognized specialist, she applies not only to the ancient American cultures, but also to the history of the indigenous population to this day. She is a member of the Berlin Society for Anthropology, Ethnology and Prehistory and the Society for Ethnography . She is also a member of the scientific advisory board of the Ethnographic-Archaeological Journal .
