history

In the 16th and 17th centuries, Ushaiqir was an important religious center that produced numerous ʿUlamā ' . In the 17th century, 18 ʿUlamā 'were born there, and another 14 took up residence there. The al-Musharraf clan, whose best-known member was Muhammad ibn ʿAbd al-Wahhāb , came from Ushaiqir. When the place came under Saudi- Wahhabi control in 1766 , its importance waned. Opponents of the Wahhabi school of thought left the place by 1800. The importance of the neighboring town of Shaqrāʾ increased.

In July 2017, Ushaiqir gained worldwide fame after a video clip of a woman with the pseudonym Model Khulood surfaced on the Internet , who moved around the town and was filmed in a massive violation of the clothing regulations applicable to women . The video and the choice of location in the heartland of Wahhabism were perceived as a conscious protest against the dress code in force in Saudi Arabia and led to controversial discussions on the widespread social media there.
