Useful Iceland (basically translated from English Useful island ) is an island off the Danco Coast of Graham lands north of the Antarctic Peninsula . In the Gerlache Strait , it is 3 km west of Rongé Island and is separated from it by a series of cliffs . Immediately to the east of it is Useless Island .
Participants in the Belgica expedition (1897–1899) led by the Belgian polar explorer Adrien de Gerlache de Gomery discovered them. The name goes back to scientists from the British Discovery Investigations , who carried out surveys in this area in 1927. The name probably reflects the importance of the island for the whalers of the time.
