Uskam (Klein Helgoland)

The Uskam , located in the immediate area of the beach promenade north of Sassnitz , also known as New Helgoland due to its shape , is the sixth largest known boulder on the island of Rügen .

Consisting of Precambrian Småland - Granite existing boulder was on 1999 Geotop captured. With a volume of 41 m 3 , it has a mass of 110 tons. The 5.5 m long, 4.80 m wide and 3 m high boulder made of reddish granite rich in alkali feldspar comes from southern Sweden and was transported with the glaciers to northern Germany in the Pleistocene during the last ice age .

The boulder could temporarily be entered over a bridge. A storm surge destroyed this bridge on 3rd / 4th November 1995. The metal bridge, which was restored a short time later, was destroyed again by heavy ice on February 21, 2002 and was not restored.

Like the Buskam , the Uskam is one of the so-called Adebar stones . According to legend, storks put babies from the Baltic Sea to dry on these stones and then brought them to their mothers' homes.
