Utami Dewi

Utami Dewi (born June 16, 1951 in Surabaya , also known as Nio Pik Wan , married Utami Kinard ) is a former Indonesian badminton player . She was world champion with the Indonesian women's team in 1975 and vice world champion in 1969 and 1972. She later emigrated to the USA. Rudy Hartono is her brother, Zulkarnain Kurniawan was her father.

Career

In the 1969 Uber Cup final , the up-and-coming Indonesian team faced Japan, but lost 6-1. In this final, Utami Dewi lost in the singles to Tomoko Takahashi with 3:11 and 8:11. In 1972 the Indonesian women fared no better. This time, too, there was a heavy 6-1 defeat. Dewi lost her individual again, this time against Noriko Nakayama with 2:11 and 0:11. Three years later, the Indonesians were finally able to wrest the cup from their opponents and win 5: 2 in front of their home crowd. Dewi was once again defeated by Noriko Nakayama with 5:11 and 3:11.

In the individual disciplines, Utami Dewi won the women's singles at the Asian Championships in 1971 . At the 1972 Olympics, where badminton was played as a demonstration sport , she failed again in the final against Noriko Nakayama . In Indonesia she was national champion in women's singles and doubles several times. In 1981, after marrying US badminton star Chris Kinard , she also won the US women's singles championships.
