The uterus bicornis , from Latin bi 'two' or 'double' and cornu 'horn', is a relatively common malformation of the uterus with division of the corpus (uterine body), but a common portio .

Preparation of a bicornuate uterus

Classification

Depending on the extent of the subdivision, the following subdivision is common:

  • Partial bicornuate uterus , only partial separation of the corpus
  • Uterus bicornis unicollis , complete separation with common uterine neck (more common form).

As a transition form to the uterus didelphys there is the uterus bicornis bicollis , complete separation also of the portio.

Occurrence

The incidence is estimated at 0.1–0.5%.

root cause

It is based on a disorder in embryonic development in which the two Müller ducts only incompletely fuse, so that the uterus does not look normally pear-shaped, but rather "horned".

Clinical manifestations

There is a higher risk of premature birth and miscarriage , including uterine ruptures .

diagnosis

Bicornuate uterus with early pregnancy on ultrasound

The diagnosis is usually made by sonography .

Differential diagnosis

Other uterine malformations such as uterus didelphys and uterus septus must be distinguished .
