Utricularia nelumbifolia is a plant from the genus of the water hoses ( utricularia ) within the family of lentibulariaceae (Lentibulariaceae). This carnivorous plant is native to Brazil .

features

Utricularia nelumbifolia is a perennial, epiphytic and at the same time aquatic plant of creeping growth. It forms few, fleshy and stalk-round stolons of 3.0 and more centimeters in length and 2.0-3.0 mm in thickness. They have forked ramifications several millimeters long and 0.1-0.2 mm thick. The leaves appear individually or in pairs from each stem base. Their stems are quite long with up to 45.0 cm and fused with the middle of the lamina . This is multi-nerved, circular to shield-shaped, leathery and reaches 3–10 cm in diameter. The entire plant is covered in its submerged parts with spherical glands.

The traps appear in large numbers and are mainly located on the submerged stolon branches. They are stalked, egg-shaped and their size varies between 1.5 and 2.5 mm. The opening is frontal and there is a curved appendage to the left and right of the flap.

The inflorescence grows upright, is simple and unbranched. It becomes up to 1.20 m long, the stem is round in cross section, 3.0–5.0 mm thick and smooth. The bracts are fused at their base, narrow-linear and about 3.0-5.0 mm long. Four to nine flowers appear at regular intervals of about 1–3 cm. The sepals are slightly oval and both about 1.0–1.5 cm long. The corolla is 3.0-4.0 cm long and blue-violet in color. The upper lip of the flower is broadly ovate with a rounded tip, it is longer than the sepals. The lower lip is obverse-elliptical and about 3.5–4.5 cm wide. Its base has two conspicuous, swollen lobes, the tip of the lower lip is deeply incised and three-lobed. The two outer lower lip lobes are almost circular, the middle lobe is much smaller, deltoid and sometimes almost absent. The flower spur is conical, tapering to a point, slightly curved forward or is parallel to the lower lip and is slightly longer than this.

The nodding capsule fruit is spherical to broadly ovoid, its length is 0.8–1.0 mm; the capsule walls are thickly structured. The seeds are cylindrical and about 2.0 mm in size.

Occurrence

Utricularia nelumbifolia is native to the tropical rainforests of Brazil. There it grows in water-filled leaf funnels of various bromeliads (e.g. of the genus Vriesia ), often associated with Utricularia humboldtii .

Systematics

Utricularia nelumbifolia was first described by George Gardner in 1843 . It is assigned to the Iperua section .
