description
Vegetative characteristics
Utricularia pubescens is a one to biennial, terrestrial or lithophytic plant with a creeping habit. It forms only a few rhizoids of simple construction and a thickness of about 0.2 mm. The stolons, on the other hand, are richly branched and several centimeters long. The leaves are numerous and loosely distributed over the stolons. Their stalks are 2–10 mm long, the sometimes fleshy lamina is shield-shaped and reaches about 1–8 mm in diameter. The leaf veins are forked and only slightly interwoven.
The traps appear in large numbers and grow on the rhizoids, stolons, and petioles. They are egg-shaped, sitting on short stems, and their size varies between 0.5 and 0.8 mm. The opening is on the side and has short-stemmed, comb-shaped glands on the outside of the trap flap and close to the flap.
Generative characteristics
The inflorescence is erect, simple and unbranched. It becomes 2–35 cm long, the stalk is round in cross section, 0.3–0.6 mm thick and hairy glandular. The bracts are fused at their base, oval and about 1.0 mm long. The flowers appear singly or up to ten. The sepals are slightly convex and covered with papillae . The corolla is 5–10 mm long and white to pale purple in color, it has a yellowish spot on the lower lip with a dark purple border, sometimes the entire spot is monotonous purple. The upper lip of the flower is noticeably smaller than the lower, it is elongated and narrows towards the tip; the lower lip is almost circular, with a clearly visible crest at the base and a rounded tip. The flower spur is conical and slightly longer than the lower lip. The flowering period seems to extend over the whole year, but Utricularia pubescens is particularly flowering at the beginning and at the end of the rainy season.
The seed capsules are spherical, their diameter is approx. 1–2 mm. The capsule walls are plump and relatively thick. The seeds are about 0.25 mm in size.
Distribution and habitat
Utricularia pubescens is native to India, tropical Africa from Guinea to Ethiopia and Zambia, and the rainforests of South America. Where it grows in torfhaltigem and ver sumpftem grasslands, to streams or on wet rock. Their habitats can be sunny or shady and are 0–1000 m above sea level.
Systematics
Utricularia pubescens is the only species in the Lloydia section , closely related to the Calpidisca and Australes sections . The species was first described in 1819 by James Edward Smith , the section in 1986 by Peter Taylor .
