Utz Schäffer

Utz Schäffer (born November 6, 1966 in Stuttgart ) is a German economist . He holds a chair for controlling and corporate management and is director of the Institute for Management and Controlling (IMC) at WHU - Otto Beisheim School of Management .

Life

After completing an apprenticeship at Dresdner Bank , Utz Schäffer studied business administration at the WHU - Otto Beisheim School of Management in Vallendar , the EM Lyon and the Kellogg School of Management in Chicago. In 1993 he graduated from WHU. In 1996 he was a scholarship from the studienstiftung at the Chair for Controlling and Telecommunications at Jürgen Weber with the work "controlling for self-tuning groups?" Doctorate . After working as a consultant at CTcon and McKinsey , he completed his habilitation in 2001 with the thesis “ Control as a learning process”.

In 2002 he was offered a professorship at the EBS University of Economics and Law in Oestrich-Winkel and took over the chair for business administration, especially controlling . In 2003/2004 he held a visiting professorship at the University of Innsbruck , from 2012–2015 he was a visiting professor at the Dongbei University in Dalian (China). From 2003 to 2007 he was also Vice Rector for Research and Chairman of the Doctoral Committee of EBS.

In 2007 he accepted a chair for business administration, especially controlling and corporate management, at WHU. Together with Marko Reimer and Jürgen Weber, he heads the Institute for Management and Controlling (IMC) there.

Act

Schäffer's research deals with controlling and corporate management, in particular the role of controllers and the digital transformation of controlling. He is the author of numerous publications in leading journals (such as  Accounting, Organizations and Society, Contemporary Accounting Research , European Accounting Review, Journal for Management and Governance, Management Accounting Research , Strategic Management Journal ), co-editor of Controlling & Management Review and the journal of Management Control (JoMaC) and co-author of the standard work Introduction to Controlling (16th edition 2020), which is also available in Chinese, Russian, English and Polish.

In addition, Schäffer is a board member of the Board of Trustees of the International Controller Association (ICV) and a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of CTcon GmbH.

Schäffer is the first German university professor who has taught exclusively at private universities and has obtained his degrees there.
